If you are new to yoga, or finding your way back to your practice then you have come to the right place!  Below is guidance to welcome you to our community.

What classes do you recommend for beginners?

  • We have several class options that are good for beginners.  Be sure to check out the list HERE of our current classes.  Please note that the schedule is subject to change.

  • Be sure to inform your instructor that you are new to yoga, and if there are any injuries that they need to be aware of.  This helps us guide you in your practice so you practice safely.

  • Occasionally we will offer a Yoga 101 series - keep an eye out for this event.

What all do I need to bring to class?

  • Bring a yoga mat with you if you have one, no worries if you forget we have some you can borrow at no cost to you.  We are happy to make recommendations on mats as well if you are looking to purchase one.

  • You're welcome to bring props you have, but we have everything you need.

  • You may wish to bring a small hand towel if you sweat and some water to drink.

What should I wear to yoga?

  • Make sure you come dressed comfortably in yoga pants or stretchy pants/shorts of some sort and a t-shirt or tank top.  You will want to avoid anything that is too constrictive.

  • You will need to be barefoot for most of the classes (restorative would be the only exception).

What do I do when I arrive?

  • Come on in and make yourself at home!  You'll leave your shoes and jackets in the main lobby.

  • Check-in at the front desk or with your instructor

  • Leave your personal items in the cubbies or take them into class, just make sure your phone is on silent.

  • Grab whatever props you want, and head into class

Common Misconceptions:

  • I'm not flexible or bendy.  No worries, you don't have to be.  We want you to listen to your body - it's not a competition in our classes, it's about connecting or reconnecting your body and breath.

  • I don't have fancy yoga clothes to wear.  Nope, we aren't about how you look at GTY.  We want you to be comfortable just as you are - so wear what makes you feel good.

  • I've never done yoga before, I'm afraid of embarrassing myself.  You have come to the right place, we accept you right where you are in life and your practice.  There is no judgements or comparisons when we practice together - your own personal journey on your mat is all yours.  You'll find the most welcoming folks at GTY!

  • You have to look a certain way to do yoga.  Heck no!  Yoga is truly for everyBody.  It doesn't matter your gender, your size, your flexibility, etc.  If you have a body, you can do yoga.  Our community is made up of a wonderfully diverse group of people, and we would love to welcome you!

  • Yoga is just stretching.  Yoga is so much more than the asanas (poses), it is a way of being, and what we experience in between each breath as we practice.  Yoga is a great way to reconnect with your body, reduce anxiety, improve your sleep, balance a more active exercise routine/lifestyle, and so much more.  We invite you to check it out for yourself and let us know what you think.
